On the way to Taitung we stopped at the Baxian Caverns. Today these house statues of divine beings, but 5,000 to 15,000 years ago they were used by the Chunpin culture, the earliest known Taiwan occupants.
Further south we saw a bridge leading to a small island. The narrow bridge offers a walk along a dragon’s back to San Xian Tai (Terrace of the Three Immortals).
Along the shore, a couple was smoking fish. The aboriginal word for smoked fish is “gagahoo.” The three we bought were delicious.
